Football match; NDT Services Allstars v Accrofab Blue-Sox

Accrofab Blue Sox Team June 24th 2008

On a balmy June evening, NDT Services Ltd took to the football field in answer to a challenge from one of their clients, Accrofab, in a match which was played at the Moorways pitch in Derby.

The game was officiated in his own inimitable manner, by Peter Maiden, who got the job due to the fact the he had the kit, the flags and whistle, and no one else wanted to do it. The game kicked off with both teams probing for an early goal, and it was NDT who struck first, after 15 minutes, with a well placed far post header from Jake Manley, after some sterling [albeit slightly fortunate] work from the NDT skipper, Max Eyre.

NDT All Stars TeamAs the pace of the game understandably slowed from sedate to almost pedestrian towards half time, Accrofab scored with a well worked equalizer. The half time air was thick with anticipation, heaving lungs and Nobby’s cigar smoke, and for the first time in the match, tactics were discussed and substitutes were brought on to replace those who would not last out the second half.Tommo assumed his normal position, and issued new instructions for the second half. It has to be said that Gary [Growler] Ginno, showed more flair and artistry in the second half, when he was running the line!

Fabien TomlinsonThe second half got under way with a rejuvenated NDT playing with more purpose. The “Goal machine” [aka, Kevin Lock] came close with a header that scraped the bar, and several other chances went begging from the same player, before skipper, Max Eyre jinked past a couple of defenders on the edge of the box, and showed him how to do it, making the score 2 – 1 to NDT.

Midfield MaestrosAccrofab, who had an unbeaten record stretching back 8 years, were not going to accept defeat without a fight, and continued to contribute with good attacking play and resolute defending, but it was NDT who were to score again, when Max Eyre played a quick one-two with Michael Vaughan, and then laid the ball on a plate to Locky, who couldn’t miss. Accrofab continued to press and were rewarded 20 minutes from the end with another well worked goal, making the score 3 – 2, in the favour of NDT.

Rolling back the yearsAccrofab now had the bit between their teeth, and only some experienced defending from Collo and Tommo, kept them at bay, and in the dying moments of the game NDT sealed the win when Locky calmly finished in front of goal, to restore the two goal lead.

The Older I Get The Faster I was!The game was played in the right spirit from both sides, and NDT had match winning performances from Collo, Tommo, Michael Vaughan and Andy Boulton, with skipper Max Eyre being nominated as Man of the Match.
